This will be an intimate safari guided by Jackson Looseyia in his very personal way. Jackson is a Maasai and one of the best wildlife guides in Africa. He is an eloquent communicator with a twinkle in his eye and a great sense of humour – no wonder the BBC handpicked him to co-present the ‘Big Cat Diary’ series with Simon King.
Jackson lives by the rhythms of the plains every day and so knows where the best places are to see the action and where to look for individual characters of the Marsh Pride, Bahati the leopard, Malika the cheetah and other stars of The Mara.
The Mara never fails to deliver spectacular wildlife viewing, and in January it is uncrowded with visitors but brimming with wildlife. The grass is lush attracting the wildebeest and their predators. The days are long and sunny and warm.
Safari details
11 January Meet Liz Drake at London Heathrow. Fly to Nairobi. Overnight in Nairobi.
12 January Morning flight to The Mara. Jackson will meet us at the airstrip and the safari will commence as we head across Musiara Marsh looking for members of the Marsh pride and on to our tented camp.
Our camp is in one of the best locations in The Mara, with easy and quick to access both the Masai Mara Reserve and the Mara Triangle and in the heart of where lots of the action takes place.
The large mess area is open-sided with a jaw-dropping panoramic view over the plains, a frequently used salt lick and a sweeping bend of the Mara River. It has a fireplace, dining area, bar, photographers work station with re-charging facilities, and somewhere to relax and admire the view.
The tents are spaciously spread out with wonderful views overlooking a salt lick and in the distance the Mara River. They are very comfortable, large traditional tents under a thatched roof and with wooden floors and a private terrace. Each tent has a double and single bed, ensuite shower and flush toilet. Hot water is on tap and electricity is generator-powered. Power sockets are available in the mess area.
Mid-afternoon head out on to the plains to enjoy the wildlife. The Mara is undoubtedly the best wildlife reserve in Kenya because of the phenomenal diversity of species that can be seen in volume, providing an unrivalled wildlife spectacle and truly rewarding experience – lion and cheetah sightings are almost guaranteed and even the elusive leopard can be found. The plains abound with rhino, elephant, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, gazelles, hyenas, hippo and jackal.
As dusk approaches The Mara takes on a different mood and finally we have to head back to drinks around a welcoming camp fire and supper.
13, 14, 15 & 16 January Four full days on safari every day with Jackson.
There is no timetable when you are on safari with Jackson, other than nature’s own, so expect long days out on the plains observing the action as it unfolds before you. Being on safari with Jackson is very special as he shares his knowledge of the natural world, respect for his land and traditions of his Maasai culture with enthusiasm. There are bound to one or two surprises and observing wildlife definitely takes precedence over heading back to camp! There will be times of great activity as well as times when you simply sit and wait to see if anything is going to happen. Jackson is an accomplished photographer and excellent teacher using easy to understand explanations of how to get the most out of your camera and achieve the best wildlife shots.
17 January Final morning on the plains and breakfast in camp, before taking the flight back to Nairobi. Farewell dinner in Nairobi. Depart Nairobi.
