- Hotel accommodation in the heart of Venice
Whether it’s your first visit to Venice or not, you will be in awe of the grandeur and enthralled by the uniqueness of Venice. The special light, the architecture and its canals are what draws artists to Venice time and time again.
Six full days painting in Venice, working alongside Ken Howard or independently. Ken has a studio in Venice and has been painting here for decades. He knows the city intimately and will show you his favoured spots. This is a very special and unique opportunity to paint with such a prestigious artist in the very place that his work is so famous for.
Your accommodation is on Dorsoduro near the Gallerie dell’Accademia, which is a perfect location. Dorsoduro is much quieter and less touristy than around St Mark’s Square, the Doges Palace, the Bridge of Sighs and the Rialto Bridge, which are just a short walk across the Grand Canal.
You’ll find lesser known bridges and canals and many fine palazzos and churches to paint on Dorsoduro. Close to the hotel are the excellent areas for painting around San Sebastiano, San Trovaso and San Barnaba. Other quieter areas to discover in Venice are the Frari quarter, Santa Maria Formosa and Campo del Ghetto Nuovo as well as the fish market which Ken never tires of painting. One of the best views of Venice is from the smaller Isola di San Giorgio, which is quickly reached by vaporetti.
Painting programme
Ken is best known for capturing the light as it moves across cities and for convivial evenings when he openly shares his love of painting and life. This painting holiday is most suitable for advanced students and experienced painters. Ken Howard does not provide tuition, nor give demonstrations or critiques. He will be working in oils but all media are welcome. A typical day with Ken starts as soon as dawn breaks returning to the hotel for breakfast, before heading back out again for more painting. A leisurely lunch break recharges the batteries for the final painting session until the sunsets. Ken will encourage you to do lots of painting. He will give some informative talks and presentations on how he works. Evenings are social occasions when you have the opportunity to get to know Ken well.
