Amsterdam is compact, flat and easy to walk around. It is a perfect location for artists with much to paint. Its many canals, bridges, houseboats, tall gabled houses with large windows, narrow streets, church spires, street markets, trams, bicycles and bohemian culture provide endless painting subjects.
You’ll be accommodated in a traditional canal house hotel on the lovely Keizersgracht Canal. The location could not be better. Step outside the hotel and you are on a quintessential canal, lined with gabled seventeenth century merchants’ houses. Walk around the corner and you’ll find yourself immersed in the heart of the Jordaan District; a quieter quarter formerly inhabited by Jews including Anne Frank and workers. Is now an avant-garde cultural hub.
A 3-minute walk in the other direction and you’re in Dam Square and heading towards the old medieval centre of Amsterdam and the infamous Red Light District. Nearby is the 14th century Begijnhof (alms houses) – a surreal oasis of peace with tiny houses and postage-stamped gardens around a courtyard. The Museum Quarter and Vondelpark are a longer walk or a short tram ride away, where you can see great masterpieces such Rembrandt’s The Night Watch, and of course works by Van Gogh, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, Monet, Mondrian and Bernard.
Ken Howard will be with you every day. He will be painting close to the hotel and everyone is welcome to work alongside him or independently. He will be working in oils but all mediums are welcome. The informal style of this holiday will not include tuition, demonstrations or critiques. Ken will give some informative talks and presentations on how he works. Evening meals provide an ideal opportunity to get to know Ken in an informal and relaxed atmosphere.
Travel is by executive coach and ferry, which is very easy and relaxed. Amsterdam is only a four hour drive from Calais. You have no luggage and painting equipment restrictions. If you choose the 7 night option you will return to the UK by plane, only the 10-night option travels by coach in both directions.

Your hotel is a characterful canal house hotel – an intoxicating mix of bohmenia and minimalism. With just 23 rooms it will feel like a ‘home from home’ and its quiet courtyard garden is a perfect place inwhich to quietly work or retire to. Dinners are included and will be organised in a selection of local restaurants by your accompanying travel escort, who is on hand to take care of all arrangements.
