Symi can only be reached by boat and your first glimpse of it, as the ferry turns around the headland, is jaw dropping – a natural harbour lined with pastel coloured neo-classical villas clinging to the hillsides. It is the prettiest harbour in Greece. The old town ‘Horio’ clings to the hillside and has no roads – it is a maze of tiny alleyways and steps where life has changed little. It’s sleepy, quiet and timeless. Ladies dressed in black sit in doorways, old men play backgammon and cats doze in the sunshine.

In contrast the harbour jostles with fishing boats, ferries, yachts, people, tavernas and shops. In a quieter corner of the harbour former merchant’s houses and fishermen’s cottages line the quayside.

Symi is the quintessential Greek island.

Your accommodation is a small hotel on the waters edge in the quieter part of the harbour. It was a former sea captains house and is full of old world charm, with original features and traditional furniture. There are just 15 rooms so we hope to  have exclusive use of the hotel, which will make for a special informal house-party atmosphere. It has a roof terrace that is perfect for painting the sunsets and views across the harbour towards to old town. The hotel’s restaurant is where Rick Stein chose to base himself in for his last TV series!

Hazel Soan is a versatile and talented artist. She is an excellent teacher with a natural gift of drawing out the best in students. She will illustrate a wide range of the topics with talks and demonstrations, and help you return with an impressive portfolio of work. Hazel will be working in watercolour.

Flights are to Rhodes and you will spend the first evening here and on the following day have an opportunity to paint in the old town of the Knights of St John before taking the ferry to Symi.

Breakfast and dinners are included and  you will be well looked after by an accompanying travel escort.
