Brown Bear Watching in Finland
Naturalist Stephen Mills has just returned from leading a fantastic trip to observe brown bears in the wild. He travelled to a remote area in northern Finland on the border with Russia and The Arctic Circle. He was accompanying a party of 5 guests plus Paula our Finnish escort.
For three nights they watched and photographed bears from the comforts of their hide and they had brilliant sightings of a mother with three tiny cubs (born in February), plus 6 or 8 other different bears. In addition they saw 23 fish eagles, golden eagles, osprey and a variety of other species of wildlife that this unique habitat had to offer.
Why May is the best time to see brown bears
The end of May is a brilliant time to go bear watching in this area because:
- Midnight sun – so you can stay out all night to observe bears
- It’s the flowering season – so the scenery is glorious
- It’s the nesting season for golden eagles
- The wilderness and light is stunning
- It’s very special to be so close to the Russian border and The Arctic Circle
Here is a video they took of the mother with her three adorable cubs that they saw each evening (now seen on Finnish TV).
